J L Remembers School Recess And Sports

J L remembers some games the kids played at school like Over-The-River and Drop-The-Handkerchief. They also played basketball. He thinks the boys played half-court, but the girls played on a court divided into thirds. All sports took place after school.

He walked to school. He remembers his aunt that had arthritis and would take a horse and buggy to school, but then bought a car to use instead.

He tells the story of the teacher planning to spank a high school boy, but the boy basically refused and ran off and never came back to school.

The schools would have bake sales and such to raise a little money. They did not have dances, but did do something that sounds like square dancing.
